Being that this exhibit is taking place in the gallery of a library, I have a list of quotes from books/authors that go along with each of the images that will be displayed. Truth is, I do this for each and every picture that I complete. As a book and word lover, a piece is not complete to me until I find the perfect quote (to me) that captures the essence of the image.
I believe that the curator of my show is going to make a printout of these quotes available as a handout and I hope she does because it will add a really nice touch to the show.
I thought, too, that it would be a good idea to post the quotes here, along with their corresponding image...even though there are 26 of them!
Speaking of 26, there are only supposed to be 25 on display. We miscounted somewhere along the line (don't ask; there are framed pictures stacked all over the living room. He counts, I count, we add...and still something goes wrong! lol) and now I have to decide which one to cut and I hate doing that. It has been so hard to pick out which pieces to use when there are - what? - a hundred to choose from. Maybe even more than that. Oy.
So for now, I'm keeping it at 26.
And here they are, with their quotes...
BAIT TACKLE GAS & CRABS
“And the downtrodden found refuge in dilapidation; and were happy there because it was theirs and no one else's; bare of pretences and expectations, this place became a haven of solace and a sanctum for peace.”
― C.M. Stunich, Tasting Never
BAY HEAD SKYLINE
“Although he was not a religious person, seeing the skyline made him feel what is called in Latin the mysterium tremedum et fascinans - that stomach-flipping mix of awestruck fear and entrancing fascination.”
― John Green, An Abundance of Katherines
BIRD + TREE
“To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life. ”
― John Burroughs, Leaf and Tendril
BREAKAWAY BEACH
“When the sky is clear, when the sea is calm and the full moon is rising, whatever you are doing, leave it; go to the seaside; sit and watch it! You will then reach the land where there is no thinking; the land of pure wisdom!”
― Mehmet Murat Ildan, The Lovers of Samos Island
COW MANURE
“They got a manure machine in there,” Keller said. He went up to the barn and peeked through a hole between two boards. “On wheels. It’s fun to ride sometimes, when you don’t care how you smell.”
― Sandra Neil Wallace, Little Joe
FLOCK TOGETHER
“She laughed enough to migrate an entire flock of birds. That was how she said yes.”
― Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Galloping there

GIRLS ON BEACH
“No one knows you like a person with whom you've shared a childhood. No one will ever understand you in quite the same way.”― Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic
(this one is for you, Karen)
“The moon and sun are travelers through eternity. Even the years wander on. Whether drifting through life on a boat or climbing toward old age leading a horse, each day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.”
― Bashō Matsuo
MOONSTAR FARM
“The pale stars were sliding into their places. The whispering of the leaves was almost hushed. All about them it was still and shadowy and sweet. It was that wonderful moment when, for lack of a visible horizon, the not yet darkened world seems infinitely greater—a moment when anything can happen, anything be believed in.”
― Olivia Howard Dunbar, The Shell of Sense
ONE: BIRD TREE BARN
“She had become accustomed to being lonely. She was used to walking alone and to being considered 'different.' She did not suffer too much.”

PEACHY BEACHY
“It was as if when I looked into his eyes I was standing alone on the edge of the world...on a windswept ocean beach. There was nothing but the soft roar of the waves.”

― Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife
ROOFTOP REVERIE
“Then, as though it had been waiting on a nearby roof for their arrival, the moon came slanting suddenly through the vines and turned the girl's face the color of white roses.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Beautiful and Damned
SADFLOWERS
“This is my depressed stance. When you're depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you'll start to feel better. If you're going to get any joy out of being depressed, you've got to stand like this.”
― Charles M. Schulz
SIGNS OF SPRING
I glanced out the window at the signs of spring. The sky was almost blue, the trees were almost budding, the sun was almost bright.”
― Millard Kaufman, Bowl of Cherries
SUNDAY IN ALEXANDRIA
“Sometimes I have loved the peacefulness of an ordinary Sunday. It is like standing in a newly planted garden after a warm rain. You can feel the silent and invisible life.”
― Marilynne Robinson, Gilead
SUNSET AT NEW CASTLE
“The last laugh, the last cup of coffee, the last sunset, the last time you jump through a sprinkler, or eat an ice-cream cone, or stick your tongue out to catch a snowflake. You just don't know.”

THROUGH THE FOG
“There are your fog people & your sun people, he said. I said I wasn't sure which kind I was. He nodded. Fog'll do that to you, he said.”

― Jean Webster, Daddy-Long-Legs
And away we go...

MURMURATION
“The reason birds can fly and we can't is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.” ― J.M. Barrie, The Little White BirdONE: BIRD TREE BARN

RED BARN IN ALLOWAY
“Inside a barn is a whole universe, with its own time zone and climate and ecosystem, a shadowy world of swirling dust illuminated in tiger stripes by light shining through the cracks between the boards. Old leather tack, lengths of chain, rope, and baling twine dangled from nails and rafters and draped over stall railings. Generations of pocketknives lay lost in the layers of detritus on the floor.”
― Carolyn Jourdan, Heart in the Right Place

STARK
“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
― Lewis Carroll“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

TRANQUILITY LAKE
“I'm going to enjoy every second, and I'm going to know I'm enjoying it while I'm enjoying it. Most people don't live; they just race. They are trying to reach some goal far away on the horizon, and in the heat of the going they get so breathless and panting that they lose sight of the beautiful, tranquil country they are passing through; and then the first thing they know, they are old and worn out, and it doesn't make any difference whether they've reached the goal or not.”― Jean Webster, Daddy-Long-Legs
